The Schanfarber Method is designed to help you recognize, remember, and embody the truth of who you are and why you are here, so that you can proceed on your life journey with sustained joy, clarity, and confidence.
It seeks to elevate your well-being beyond just good ideas or mental concepts into something you feel as real, every day, becoming your moment-to-moment lived experience.
One of the key features is that it constantly orients you to the present moment, with a view toward what you want next, rather than trying to resolve something from the past.
The method is simple but profound, and will grow with you, providing guidance to keep perfect pace with your trajectory of growth and discovery.
It’s built on four assertions of truth:
- Your existence is proof of your worthiness, your belonging, and your success.
- Your life on earth is meant to be a creative act, a successful venture, and a journey of joyful discovery. Your true nature is joy, and your purpose is to thrive and enjoy your life until it’s time to return to your non-physical source, a return which is best celebrated and acknowledged as part of a perfect design.
- You are simultaneously a temporary physical body, and an infinite aspect of all that is, all that has been, and all that is becoming.
- You are the living face of an ever-expanding universe, and a creator at the leading edge of reality.
Do you agree? Do you feel resonance with these ideas?
The bigger question is, are you living your day to day life as an embodied expression of these truths?
If so, you must be enjoying yourself immensely!
If you are not yet a living expression of these truths, you’re sure to be feeling the pain of their absence. Whenever you are ready, these four truths are always here to soothe and guide you.
Using Your Three Operating Systems
Evolution, thanks to the contributions of every ancestor who has come before, has generously provided each of us with three distinct, overlapping operating systems to guide us and give us the insights and tools we need to thrive in this world.
Simply put, these three operating systems are:
- Cognition
- Sensation
- Emotion
Everyone has access to all three, but very few people are using more than one of them with any sort of real expertise or proficiency. This is because we each tend to become dependent on one (often cognition, i.e., thinking), and neglect or abuse the others.
All three systems must be fully developed, honored, and enjoyed if you are to know your purpose, fulfill your potential, and enjoy real and lasting success and well-being.
Our power of self-awareness and our ability to improve our inner lives are linked to these three operating systems, which can also be understood as energy channels, aspects of self, or modes of engaging yourself and the world.
They are, again: Cognition, Sensation, Emotion.
That’s it. It’s a seemingly small palette to work with, and yet it offers infinite possibilities.
All of life is experienced through these three channels, and it is these, in combination, nothing else, that determines the sum total of your lived experience.
This is precisely why so many people are confused, pained, and struggling. They have not taken the time to become familiar, fluent, and flexible in the workings of all three modes. No one has explained the importance. No one has shown them how.
Instead, most of us rely on only one channel, usually cognition (the rational, thinking, conceptual self), occasionally falling back on a second, and oblivious or dismissive of the third altogether.
No amount of over-development of one mode can compensate for neglecting the other two. This only creates imbalances and distortions, leading to fragility, incoherence, and breakdowns.
In other words, if you try to live your life exclusively through the operating system of cognition, thinking your way through every life event, ignoring what your emotions are telling you, dismissing what your body is saying, you are setting yourself up for a big fall.
The fall might be a divorce, a heart-attack, chronic anxiety, or depression. The fall comes in many forms.
A person stuck in this pattern of lop-sided living will see the signs of trouble on the horizon, and then usually just double-down with rationalizations and justification, neglecting or abusing both their emotional guidance and their body.
I’ve seen this innumerable times in my twenty years as a therapist.
Only when something seriously breaks does this person become willing to touch into the truth of who they are in their wholeness, to heal their inner rifts and tensions, to lay down their burdens, and to finally engage the world and themselves through all three aspects of self, including their body and their emotions.
This is an intense process, and when it happens, a person can really benefit from some help and guidance.
It’s worth noting that not everyone favors cognition or thinking as their primary mode of engaging themselves and the word.
I’ve met professional dancers who are finely attuned to the sensation in their body, and take great satisfaction and guidance in that subtle awareness, but have not learned to expand that somatic ability into clear thinking or emotional stability and well-being.
I’ve also known artists with remarkable emotional sensitivity, but little ability (or desire) to develop that sensitivity further, into emotional discernment, so that they could enjoy a life of stability, clarity, and ease. Their emotions remain a source of creativity, but also of dysfunction, confusion, and chaos, spilling into their relationships and creating hardship.
It needn’t be that way. You can enjoy the best of all three modes – cognition, sensation, emotion – without sacrifice or downside.
How then, to bring all three aspects of self into balance, and to keep up with the maintenance and development of each one, all the while attending to the many responsibilities of life?
Life actually provides the answer to this question with every new day, but it’s up to you to listen, to receive the message.
We live in a world that offers a literally infinite selection of opportunities to feel good, to feel satisfied, to feel nourished, to feel awe, wonder, love, belonging, healing, and inspiration in virtually every moment, and it’s through our refinement of our three operating systems that we learn to tune in to these infinite opportunities being offered.
It isn’t hard to do this, it’s a natural result of learning to allow. Most people have built up great resistance to allowing themselves to receive the gifts that life offers. When you look closely, that’s the real source of most suffering.
My expertise is guiding people into productive, loving, and powerful relationships with their own thinking, sensations, and emotion. It’s a homecoming, and it sets you up for having, doing, and being all that you want in this life.
